Vitra, Herman Miller and other options for your Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman

Video of some original Eames Lounge Chair and Ottomans from findmetheoriginal.com Ever heard of New York’s Museum of Modern Art? Ever heard of the Art Institute of Chicago? More importantly, are you aware that there is a chair displayed in both of these prominent locations that has developed worldwide fame and interest?

That would be the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, designed in the year 1956 by Charles Eames and Ray Eames. This chair, and its designers, still holds fame and interest today. Documentaries have been filmed on the subject of its creation, and books have also been written about its unique style. People crave these chairs, for comfort of design and prestige of ownership. The product that Charles and Ray Eames created has withstood the test of time, still popular after more than fifty years on the market, perhaps because of the care and detail that goes into each piece. Every chair is assembled by hand, and taking current environmental awareness into consideration, each chair is made of 24% recycled material.

Beware of imitation Eames products. A genuine Eames lounge chair and ottoman is expensive because of the care that goes into the design and manufacturing. If sold through the Herman Miller Company, an Eames lounge chair and ottoman is usually $4,499. If purchased from the Vitra Furniture Company, based in Europe, the same chair is €5,065 (or approximately $7,987 US).

The Eames chair has a few varieties of leather available, such as Contract Grade Leather or MCL Leather. The leather comes in many colours, from ivory, to honey, and from graphite to olive. The names help describe the leather colour and quality, such as “Pebbles Dream” or “Cola Dream.”

In terms of wood finishing, the buyer can select from either oiled or stained veneer. The oil has a sleek finish, but will need to be maintained carefully. The veneer needs only dusting for maintenance. The stained veneer comes in natural cherry, walnut and santos palisander, while the oiled finish comes in santos palisander and walnut.

Fabrics for a genuine Eames lounge chair and ottoman are of high quality. These Maharam Fabrics offer many rich colours. All cushions are individually upholstered and are interchangeable. Cushions are six inches thick in most cases, and are made from urethane foam.

There are so many choices available in purchasing a lounge chair and ottoman uniquely designed by the Eames brothers. Choosing the style and features can be a challenging task. Luckily, both the Herman Miller Company and the Vitra Furniture Company have developed user-friendly websites that allow you to mix and match fabrics and finishings to see which might best fit your home décor.

No matter which type of leather you might choose for your Eames lounge chair and ottoman, or whether you select oil or stained veneer, you will be purchasing a high-status, well-constructed chair that is guaranteed for years of comfort and enjoyment.

Choosing finishes for your Eames Lounge Chair

Eames Lounge Chair with Santos Palisander FinishFor the purists, much like the decision to only buy genuine over a quality replica, the choice of finish is another difficult buying decision when ordering your new Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman.  Do you “settle” for an entry level genuine Eames Lounge Chair  with a standard finish OR if you’ve committed to investing that much money in a quality piece of collectible furniture, must you pay the extra to get the exact finish you want?  For me, Santos Palisander is a stunning finish with amazing grain detail but sadly adds an enormous premium (between $950 and almost $2000 depending on whether it’s the oiled finish). Cherry, on the other hand does very little for me.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair - Fully LoadedWhen I was deciding on my Herman Miller Aeron, I just knew that if I was going to get one, I needed to get the fully spec’ed polished chrome model with all the bells and whistles.  I have the exact one I wanted (bought for me as a gift – and boy, what a gift!) and I absolutely love it. Looking at other Aeron’s now, they’re still fantastic chairs, but are really missing something for me.  I made the right choice…well, the person who gave it to me as a gift did.

I think I’ll probably go with Walnut when all is said and done, but I worry about whether I’d regret it. What are your thoughts on finishes?

Eames Chair Codes? LCW, DCM, DAR, WTH?

Cracking the Eames Three Letter Acronym code

Ok, so not strictly Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman related, but if you love the lounge, I’m sure your interests extend to the other Eames chairs too.

Eames releases many of it’s chairs with seemingly cryptic three letter acronyms (well, technically, they’re initialisms – as I discovered the other day). They do mean something and once you know, it’s easy to identify what a piece of furniture is, by deciphering the secret code.

In short, the abbreviation can be broken down into:

  1. First initial – Chair height or type: Lounge/Dining
  2. Second Initial – Chair style. eg. Chair, Side chair, Armchair or shell type (K-wire)
  3. Third initial – Base type. eg. legs (Metal or Wood) or base (Stacking, R-wire, X-base, Tilt-swivel, Cast)

Anyway, here’s a list of them all:

  • Eames LCW - Lounge Chair Wood

    Lounge height Chair Wood

LCW - Lounge Chair Wood legs

  • LCMLounge Chair Metal legs
  • DCWDining Chair Wood legs
  • DCMDining Chair Metal legs
  • DSRDining Side chair R-wire base
  • DSGDining Side chair wall Guard base
  • LSR - Lounge height Side chair R-wire base
  • DSS-TADining Side chair Stacking TAble base
  • DARDining Armchair R-wire base
  • LAXLounge height Armchair X-base
  • DAWDining Armchair Wood base
  • Eames RAR - Rocking Armchair R-Wire base

    Rocking Armchair R-wire base

    DSWDining Side chair Wood base

  • PAWPivot Armchair Wood base
  • DSSDining Side chair Stacking base
  • PACPlastic Armchair Cast base
  • DATDining Armchair Tilt-swivel base
  • DKRDining K-wire shell R-wire base
    (Three variants: DKR, DKR-1, DKR-2)
  • PKW-1Pivot K-wire shell Wood base
  • LARLounge Armchair R-wire base
  • RARRocking Armchair R-wire base

That should help you with your chair shopping!

Describing the style and era of Eames furniture

Carolina over at SpiffingDesign.com writes an interesting article on the use and over-use of some of the terms associated with furniture produced in the middle of last century.  The article touches on the phraseology used to describe furniture of a certain age and style.

2. There’s no such thing as the Eames Era*. (When you describe an item as such, we know very well you’re just trying to create the false impression that you, or your furniture, have actually been anywhere near a real Eames piece and we’re not fooled.)

A quick search of eBay for the term ‘Eames’ or ‘Herman Miller’ will bring up far more non-Eames and non-Herman Miller goods than the real mccoy.  As Carolina points out, ‘Eames Era’ is a term that’s become synonymous with anything manufactured from the 40′s to the 70′s and it’s not correct.

As for me.  I have Eames envy.  I’m in the throes of buying a new place and have some money set aside to buy my first Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman.  It’ll be black leather, and (if I can afford it) Santos Palisander.  Why compromise, right?  Right!?
